Sports News:  A big news has come out for Indian cricket fans. The effect of the new rates of Goods and Services Tax (GST) will now be directly seen on the tickets of Indian Premier League (IPL). The GST Council has decided to increase the tax on IPL tickets, due to which the price of going to the stadium and watching the match will now be higher than before.

This important decision was taken in a meeting held in New Delhi on 3 September under the chairmanship of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. It was decided that the GST rate on IPL tickets should be increased from 28% to 40%. Its direct impact will be seen from the IPL 2026 season.

Now 40% GST will be levied on IPL tickets

It was made clear in the GST Council meeting that now 40% GST will be levied on IPL tickets. Earlier this rate was 28%. This means that now fans will have to spend extra money to watch the match in the stadium.

Ticket Price Hike Analysis

Earlier a ticket of ₹1000 used to cost ₹1280, but now the price has gone up to ₹1400. Similarly, for a ₹500 ticket, the total cost was ₹640, which has now increased to ₹700. In the same way, a ₹2000 ticket that earlier required ₹2560 will now cost ₹2800. This continuous hike shows how ticket prices are putting more burden on common people. Families planning travel will feel the pinch of this rise.

The middle-class budget is likely to face stress due to the new rates. For frequent travelers, this increase will hit their monthly expenses harder. Overall, the rising fares are turning into a challenge for common citizens.

Fear of decline in number of fans

Experts believe that the increase in ticket prices may reduce the number of spectators in the stadium. Till now a large number of fans used to be present in the stadium during IPL matches, but due to expensive tickets many people may prefer watching TV or online broadcasts.

Different rules on other sporting events

It is important to note that this tax will not be applicable on recognized sports events. If the ticket price is up to ₹500, then there will be no GST on it. Only 18% GST will have to be paid on tickets priced above ₹500.

Tax increased on betting and gaming too

The GST Council has announced a major decision by increasing tax on betting and gaming activities. Now, a 40% GST will be imposed not just on the IPL but also on gambling, lottery, horse racing, and online money gaming. This move aims to regulate the rapidly growing gaming industry and ensure higher revenue collection. However, it is expected to create challenges for operators and players involved in these sectors. The step reflects the government’s strict stance on betting and gaming practices.
